Description

During the Late Middle Ages, Hanseatic and Hollandish traders in Bergen Norway became entangled in a complex net of ties and tensions. In this book Justyna Wubs-Mrozewicz demonstrates that in Bergen certain Hanseatic merchant groups namely Lbeckers and Overijsslers, as well as Hollanders, not only continually competed with each other, but also co-existed and cooperated with one another. To unravel the intricacies of their interaction, these merchant groups have been studied as flexible ingroups and outgroups. An analysis is made of the changing divisions between 39;us and 39;them with regard to trade politics, administration, settlements, rules, commodities traded, and conflict resolution. Drawing upon a wealth of sources, Traders, Ties and Tensions presents both the big picture of these groups broader relations, and unique details of life and trade in Bergen.br
