Illegal migration and trafficking in persons are major objects of concern nowadays. More and more, the Central European countries appear to function as important transit countries for migrants moving from Eastern Europe, Asia or the Middle East to Western Europe. In the light of the expected accession of several Central European countries to the European Union, this tendency certainly deserves our attention. The question arises whether the candidate member states of the European Union dispose of the necessary legal armamentarium to counter illegal transit migration and especially the traffic in migrants that might occur in the margin thereof. This book gives an answer to the question as to what extent Poland actually is a transit country for illegal migrants, how this phenomenon reveals itself and what it is caused by. The Polish administrative, social and criminal law are being scrutinised with a view to the elaboration of a multidisciplinary strategy for the suppression of human traffic. Illegale migratie en mensenhandel wekken vandaag de dag grote bezorgdheid. Zo wordt het aantal vrouwen dat jaarlijks zou verhandeld worden vanuit de voormalige communistische landen naar West-Europa alleen al geschat op 500000. Meer en meer blijken de Centraal-Europese landen te fungeren als transitlanden voor migranten die vanuit Oost-Europa, Azi of het Midden-Oosten naar West-Europa trekken. In het licht van de geplande toetreding van een aantal Centraal-Europese landen tot de Europese Unie, verdient deze tendens zeker aandacht. De vraag rijst of de kandidaat Lid-Staten over het nodige wettelijke instrumentarium beschikken voor het bestrijden van illegale transitmigratie en vooral van de handel in migranten die hieruit kan voortvloeien. Dit boek onderzoekt de transitmigratie via Polen. Het geeft een antwoord op de vraag in welke mate Polen werkelijk een transitland is voor illegale migranten, hoe dit fenomeen zich voordoet en waardoor het wordt veroorzaakt. Het Poolse administratieve, sociale en strafrecht worden ontleed met het oog op het uitwerken van een multidisciplinaire strategie ter bestrijding van mensenhandel.
