In 768 kwam de Angelsaksische missionaris Liafwin, beter bekend als Lebunus, naar het grensgebied tussen de Franken en Saksen om er het evangelie te verbreiden. Kort na de bouw van een gebedshuis in Wilp, trok hij de IJssel over en stichtte een kerk op de oostelijke oever, niet ver van de nederzetting Daventre. Na de verwoesting en herbouw van zijn kerk trok Lebunus verder het Saksenland in. Ondanks een weinig succesvol optreden voor de Saksische volksvergadering bleef hij er tot zijn dood in 773 prediken. Wie was Lebunus een pion of pionier in het grote tijdsgebeuren, een moedige missionaris of een overmoedige prediker wiens kerk werd verwoest en wiens bekeringsexpeditie naar Marklo een fiasco werd Het antwoord is te vinden in dit boek, waarin Dirk Otten op basis van middeleeuwse bronnen en historisch-geografisch onderzoek een beeld schetst van Lebunus39; missiearbeid en de tijd waarin hij leefde. Hij heeft een groot aantal boeken geschreven over landschap, plaatsnamen, veld- en boerderijnamen op de Veluwe.
